¡¡¡¡Guangxi Normal University has a long history of international exchange and Cooperation. As far back as 1950s-1960s, the university¡¯s Yucai campus was the site for Vietnam Yucai School and South Vietnam 9£®2 School. It produced thousands of people very useful to Vietnam, 10 of whom have been Vietnamese state leaders, more than 20 government leaders at ministerial level, and others well-known scholars and entrepreneurs. At present, the university is among the most prestigious Chinese universities in Vietnam, which has the largest population of Vietnamese students in China.
¡¡¡¡ Since the implementation of the reform in China, the university has been developing international exchange and cooperation with foreign universities in the fields of education, science and technology, and culture. It has set up close partnership with over 150 foreign institutions of higher learning and educational establishments in 36 countries. It invites delegations and scholars from foreign countries for lectures and academic exchanges every year. In the mean time, it sends administrators, teachers and students out for official visits and academic exchanges with their counterparts overseas. The university has made full use of the excellent international resources of education by inviting around 60 scholars and teachers from different countries each year to teach or lecture on a long-term or short-term basis to different majors of students and teachers.
¡¡¡¡ The university has been very active in running joint-venture programs with foreign institutions in the past few years. It has consecutively set up ¡°2+2¡±, ¡°2+1¡±, and ¡°1+1¡± programs for both foreign students and Chinese students at both undergraduate and graduate levels with colleges and universities in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. Since 2004, the university has enrolled 736 foreign students for joint-venture degree programs at undergraduate and graduate levels. So far there are 200 undergraduates and 78 graduates who are studying overseas under these joint-venture programs. Meanwhile, it enrolled for 4 successive years 646 Chinese students in total( 227 of them were enrolled as planned by the government), and 208 of them are now already studying for the next 2 years in the respective partner institution overseas as scheduled.
¡¡¡¡ Giving full play to its superiority, the university has been active in servicing the neighboring countries in their Chinese language education, and making constant efforts in the Chinese language education overseas. With its long history of nearly 30 years in teaching Chinese as a second language, the university has a strong teaching staff and rich experience in offering Chinese language teaching to foreigners. The university is also a national center for the teaching and research the Chinese language and literature. Since 2004, the university has become one of the 8 institutions in China authorized to give training to Chinese language teaching volunteers. So far, it has sent 150 volunteers to Nepal and Thailand. Meanwhile, it has sent graduating students to its partner universities overseas for teaching practice under the exchange programs. Every year, the university sends around 20 teachers to its partner institutions in the United States, Korea, and the neighboring Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia, and provides 10 Vietnamese and Kampuchean Chinese language teachers with free training. ¡¡¡¡Supported by the Office of Chinese Language Council International, the university joined hands with Prince of Songkla University in Thailand to set up Confucius Institute in 2006, and to carry out various activities to make the Chinese culture better known in Thailand. The activities were highly praised by the Chinese Embassy in Thailand and highly appreciated by the Thai authorities concerned. With the approval of the Chinese and Indonesian and Vietnamese governments, the university worked together with Malang State University and Hanoi University to set up another two Confucius Institutes which are expected to be inaugurated in the spring of 2008.
¡¡¡¡ Due to the rapid development of international students education, active international exchanges and diversified cooperation, its remarkable achievements in external exchanges and cooperation has obtained the consistent high praise of the domestic and foreign communities and become a new highlight in the university. In September 2007, 83 TV news reporters from China, Korea, Japan and 10 ASEAN countries attended the ¡°Forum on Beibu Gulf Economic Zone¡±, making series of reports about the university. Communication links the whole world, cooperation brings about brilliant success. Guangxi Normal University, an open type of modern university, establishes itself in Guilin, looks towards the whole world, brings into full play its pioneering spirits, develops multi-channeled, diversified, and multi-leveled international exchange and collaboration in order to bring up talented people of international competency.
